By Adrienne Rusinko

July has had quite the heatwave. If you can’t make a trip to the beach or take a splash in the pool, try beating the heat with our super cool stickers! A limited run of stickers are now available at Special Collections Firestone, Special Collections Mudd, and the Princeton University Library (PUL) Makerspace.

Panoramic Alphabet of Peace, 1853 Eng 19, Cotsen Children’s Library

F is for Fireworks! Panoramic Alphabet of Peace was published in London in 1856 in response to the Crimean War. Pages such as “B is Britannia, who weeps on our shore / Her soldiers and sailors returning no more” and “T for the Treaty ; see Statesmen agreed / Their countries no longer shall suffer and bleed” demonstrate the relief the British felt after the three-year-long conflict.

The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands / Mark Catesby, QH41 .C292e, Rare Books

This illustration of centaurs is the tailpiece of the index from Mark Catesby’s The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, published between 1729 and 1747. These two volumes were the culmination of Catesby’s life’s work. He spent decades traveling, collecting, and documenting the species represented. He learned how to etch copper plates himself, and there are only a handful of plates not created by him. While it’s possible Catesby might have designed his own tailpieces, they were most likely generic plates added by the printer.

Putanitsa [A Muddle] / K. Chukovskiĭ, 91282 Pams, Cotsen Children’s Library

This 1926 Soviet children’s book is filled with naughty animals who do all sorts of silly things; goats that try to fly, cats that oink, alligators that put out fires, and fish that go for strolls on land. When a little girl asks why the animals are being so mischievous, she’s told that they learned their bad behavior from watching her misbehave. Little Mura promises that she’ll be well-behaved from now on, and the animals rejoice and go back to their normal sounds, normal homes, and normal lives.
